Head Coach
Pat Bloom
Its taken Pat Bloom just three seasons to leave his mark on the UW-Stevens
Point baseball program, already ranking third on the schools all-time wins list
with a 98-45 career record while leading the team to its first Division III
World Series appearance since 1997.
Bloom guided the
Pointers to a 35-18 season in 2006 and a memorable postseason run. Having
dropped the opening game in the conference tournament and regional tournament,
the Pointers rallied to win both and reach the World Series. Overall, the team
won 10 straight games when facing elimination before finally finishing fifth at
the World Series with losses to eventual national champion Marietta (Ohio) and
runner-up Wheaton (Mass.) around a win over Aurora (Ill.). Bloom's efforts were
rewarded with the Midwest Region Coach of the Year honor.
In 2005, Bloom
piloted the Pointers to their most single-season wins in school history with a 38-11 record. Along the way, the Pointers won the WIAC tournament
championship and reached the NCAA Division III regional finals before losing to eventual national champion
UW-Whitewater, which suffered five of its seven losses to the Pointers. He was
named the WIAC Coach of the Year and Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association
Collegiate Coach of the Year following the season.
Bloom, a 2001 graduate of
UW-Stevens Point, is a former pitcher and assistant coach for the Pointers. He
has a psychology degree from UW-Stevens Point and recently completed a Masters
Degree in Sports Sciences with emphases in Sport Behavior and Performance and
Sport Organization at Miami University (Ohio).
A Tomah native, Bloom played two
seasons at Carthage College before completing his final two seasons at
UW-Stevens Point. A relief pitcher, he was a member of two conference
championship teams at Carthage and one Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference title team at UW-Stevens Point. Bloom also played on Carthages 1997
Division III World Series team that defeated UW-Stevens Point in the second
round.
Following his playing career,
Bloom spent one season as the Pointers pitching coach as UW-Stevens Point won
the WIAC tournament and advanced to the Division III tournament.
Prior to returning to UW-Stevens
Point, Bloom served as a graduate assistant in the Miami athletic department,
working closely with the CHAMPS/Life Skills program and teaching two classes
designed for freshman student-athletes. Bloom was also in charge of community
service and leadership programming for Miami athletics.
Bloom is in charge of one of the
nations winningest Division III programs over the past 10 years. The Pointers
have posted a 310-127-1 record (.709 winning pct.), including three WIAC titles
and seven NCAA tournament appearances. In addition to his coaching duties, Bloom
teaches in the universitys department of Health, Exercise Science and
Athletics and assists with development in the College of Professional Studies.
