St. Scholastica Trips Pointers for Second Straight Year

     For the second consecutive year, St. Scholastica defeated UW-Stevens Point in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament as the Saints defeated the Pointers 4-3 Wednesday morning in Wisconsin Rapids.

     The Saints took advantage of limited opportunities against Pointers� pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, scoring four runs on just four hits and leaving no runners on base in the game.

     UW-Stevens Point scored first with a run-scoring single by Adam Evanoff in the top of the fourth inning. St. Scholastica tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Chad Weiss led off with his third home run of the season.

     Kyle Wojtysiak gave the Saints the lead for good with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Doug Coe hit his 11th home run of the year to bring the Pointers within one at 3-2, but Luke Olin hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to regain the two-run cushion.

     Evanoff led off the eighth inning with a home run to complete the scoring at 4-3. Mark Moriarty picked up his ninth victory of the season as he pitched six and one-third innings. Moriarty allowed two earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven.

     Adian Kummet earned his third save of the year as he closed out the final two and two-third innings allowing only one run on two hits with three strikeouts. The Pointers drew a two-out walk in the top of the ninth, but Ryan Byrnes flew out to the warning track in left field to end the game.

     Zimmermann pitched the complete game for UW-Stevens Point, giving up four runs on four hits with 13 strikeouts. St. Scholastica will play again at 8 p.m. tonight against top-seed Ripon. UW-Stevens Point will next play on Thursday night at 8 p.m.
