Pointers Win Two
More Close Games in Florida
Close games continue to be the norm for the
UW-Stevens Point baseball team as the Pointers pulled out two tight
victories on Sunday at Port Charlotte, Fla.
The Pointers edged Suffolk (Mass.) 4-2 in 10
innings and then held off Clarkson (N.Y.) 9-8. Besides the extra-inning win
over Suffolk, the Pointers� other five games have all been decided by one
run. UW-Stevens Point is currently 4-2 overall and takes on Manchester
(Ind.) on Monday.
The Pointers trailed 2-0 to Suffolk, but got a
sacrifice fly by Brad Archambeau in the seventh and a run-scoring single
from Stewart Larsen in the eighth to tie the game. Ben Warwick delivered the
game-winning hit in the top of the 10th. Jeremy Dunnihoo was the winning
pitcher with three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, while Matt
Mehne pitched the bottom of the 10th for his third save.
Clarkson scored three runs in the top of the first
inning, but the Pointers scored nine unanswered runs to take control. Doug
Coe hit a three-run homer in the fifth for a 5-3 lead and Adam Evanoff added
a two-run double in the eighth. Clarkson drew a bases loaded walk and then
got a grand slam from Mike Bresett with two outs in the top of the ninth to
close to within a run. Jeff Zielke struck out six in six innings to earn the
win. |
