Pointers Win Two More Close Games in Florida

Close games continue to be the norm for the UW-Stevens Point baseball team as the Pointers pulled out two tight victories on Sunday at Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Pointers edged Suffolk (Mass.) 4-2 in 10 innings and then held off Clarkson (N.Y.) 9-8. Besides the extra-inning win over Suffolk, the Pointers other five games have all been decided by one run. UW-Stevens Point is currently 4-2 overall and takes on Manchester (Ind.) on Monday.

The Pointers trailed 2-0 to Suffolk, but got a sacrifice fly by Brad Archambeau in the seventh and a run-scoring single from Stewart Larsen in the eighth to tie the game. Ben Warwick delivered the game-winning hit in the top of the 10th. Jeremy Dunnihoo was the winning pitcher with three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, while Matt Mehne pitched the bottom of the 10th for his third save.

Clarkson scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Pointers scored nine unanswered runs to take control. Doug Coe hit a three-run homer in the fifth for a 5-3 lead and Adam Evanoff added a two-run double in the eighth. Clarkson drew a bases loaded walk and then got a grand slam from Mike Bresett with two outs in the top of the ninth to close to within a run.
