Pointers Overcome
Late Deficits to Beat Superior
UW-Stevens Point rallied from a pair of late
deficits to sweep a baseball doubleheader from UW-Superior on Saturday at
University Field in Stevens Point.
The Pointers battled back for an 11-9 victory in
the opening game and then used a 12-run inning to post an 18-8 triumph in
the second game. The two wins put the Pointers at 13-8 overall and 7-2 in
the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while UW-Superior fell to
7-15 overall and 1-9 in league play.
The Yellowjackets used a four-run sixth inning to
take an 8-5 lead in the opening game. The Pointers scored two runs in the
bottom of the sixth and then tied the game in the seventh when Brandon
Scheidler doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Schlosser.
Adam Evanoff snapped the tie with a three-run
homer in the eighth. The Yellowjackets put their first two batters on base
in the ninth, but a double play helped the Pointers hold them to one run in
the inning.
Brad Archambeau had a big game for the Pointers,
finishing five-for-five with three RBIs. Ryan Byrnes also was two-for-two
and drove in three runs. Jordan Zimmermann allowed two hits and struck out
five in three and two-thirds innings of relief to earn the victory.
The Pointers faced a two-run deficit in the eighth
inning of the second game, but exploded for 12 runs to win by the 10-run
rule. The Pointers scored two runs on errors to tie the game and Evanoff
again broke the deadlock with a run-scoring double. Scheidler followed with
his second homer of the game for a three-run blast that put UW-Stevens Point
ahead 12-8. Archambeau added a two-run double later in the inning and
Evanoff delivered a two-run single as the Pointers sent 17 hitters to the
plate in a frame that ended with the bases loaded and two outs when the
10-run rule went into effect.
Evanoff was three-for-five with four RBIs for the
Pointers, while Chad Beiswenger was three-for-four with five RBIs for the
Yellowjackets. Travis Kempf earned the win in relief. |
