Run Gives Pointers Split at Stout
Tim Schlosser hit a dramatic home run to lift the
UW-Stevens Point baseball team to a 4-3 victory on Wednesday at UW-Stout,
but the Pointers were unable to carry the momentum into the second game and
lost 12-8 to split a doubleheader in Menomonie.
UW-Stout scored two runs in the bottom of the
eighth in the opening game for a 3-2 lead, but Ryan Byrnes led off the ninth
with a double and Schlosser homered. Jordan Zimmermann then retired all
three batters in the bottom of the ninth for the save.
The Blue Devils scored six runs in the bottom of
the second inning in the second game and held off several Pointer rallies to
earn the split. UW-Stevens Point is now 19-12 overall and 11-4 in the
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while UW-Stout is 18-17
overall and 9-11 in the league.
Schlosser finished three-for-three in the opening
game as Brandon Hemstead worked seven innings and allowed just five hits
with five strikeouts. Jeff Zielke entered in the eighth and earned the
victory. Zimmermann hit a run-scoring double in the third inning and, after
UW-Stout tied the game in the fifth, Joel Hojnacki put the Pointers back
ahead with a run-scoring single in the seventh.
In the second game, UW-Stout took advantage of two
Pointer errors and scored four unearned runs in its six-run second inning.
The Blue Devils added two more runs in the fourth to lead 8-2 before the
Pointers began to rally. Ryan Byrnes drove in a run with a double and scored
on an error in the sixth and Adam Evanoff had a run-scoring single in the
seventh to cut the lead to 8-5. However, UW-Stout scored two runs in the
bottom of the seventh and two more in the eighth before the Pointers struck
for a three-run rally in the top of the ninth.
Byrnes was four-for-five with three RBI�s and
Brandon Scheidler was three-for-five to lead the Pointers. Eric Paul was
four-for-five for UW-Stout. Travis Kempf allowed eight runs, but just two
earned, over five innings to take the loss. |
