Pointers Break Out
With Sweep of St. Norbert
UW-Stevens Point broke out of its three-game
losing streak in a big way by rolling past St. Norbert 6-1 and 18-2 in a
non-conference baseball doubleheader on Tuesday in De Pere.
Mike Thrun pitched seven strong innings in the
opening game and Garrett Nix tossed a complete game in the second game as
the Pointers improved to 18-11 overall.
UW-Stevens Point scored runs in each of the first
three innings of opening game and then added three more in the eighth. Joel
Hojnacki led off the game with a double and scored on a balk before Brandon
Scheidler led off the second inning with a homer and Brad Archambeau opened
the third inning with a homer. Tim Schlosser hit a two-run double and scored
on an error in the eighth.
Thrun allowed one run on five hits over seven
innings before giving way to Jeff Sadlemyer, who worked two scoreless
innings of relief.
In the second game, UW-Stevens Point scored its
first six runs off of four home runs. Schlosser hit a solo home run in the
second and a two-run shot in the fourth. Archambeau hit a two-run homer in
the third and Adam Evanoff followed with a solo blast for back-to-back
homers. The Pointers led 7-2 entering the seventh inning and put 11 runs on
the board while sending 17 batters to the plate to win by the 10-run rule.
Archambeau had the biggest hit of the frame with a three-run double that
made it 14-2.
UW-Stevens Point finished the game with 16 hits as
Evanoff and Ryan Byrnes were each three-for-four. Nix allowed one earned run
and surrendered three hits with three strikeouts in his second career
complete game.
The Pointers are back on the road on Wednesday
with two games at UW-Stout. |
