Pointers Break Out With Sweep of St. Norbert

UW-Stevens Point broke out of its three-game losing streak in a big way by rolling past St. Norbert 6-1 and 18-2 in a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Tuesday in De Pere.

Mike Thrun pitched seven strong innings in the opening game and Garrett Nix tossed a complete game in the second game as the Pointers improved to 18-11 overall.

UW-Stevens Point scored runs in each of the first three innings of opening game and then added three more in the eighth. Joel Hojnacki led off the game with a double and scored on a balk before Brandon Scheidler led off the second inning with a homer and Brad Archambeau opened the third inning with a homer. Tim Schlosser hit a two-run double and scored on an error in the eighth.

Thrun allowed one run on five hits over seven innings before giving way to Jeff Sadlemyer, who worked two scoreless innings of relief.

In the second game, UW-Stevens Point scored its first six runs off of four home runs. Schlosser hit a solo home run in the second and a two-run shot in the fourth. Archambeau hit a two-run homer in the third and Adam Evanoff followed with a solo blast for back-to-back homers. The Pointers led 7-2 entering the seventh inning and put 11 runs on the board while sending 17 batters to the plate to win by the 10-run rule. Archambeau had the biggest hit of the frame with a three-run double that made it 14-2.

UW-Stevens Point finished the game with 16 hits as Evanoff and Ryan Byrnes were each three-for-four. Nix allowed one earned run and surrendered three hits with three strikeouts in his second career complete game.

The Pointers are back on the road on Wednesday with two games at UW-Stout.
