Pointers Rally
Twice in Split at Whitewater
UW-Stevens Point rallied from late deficits in
both games, but could only finish off the victory in one of the two contests
as the Pointers split a baseball doubleheader at UW-Whitewater on Sunday for
the second straight day.
The Pointers came back for an 11-9 win in the
opening game and then saw UW-Whitewater rally with two runs in the eighth
for an 8-7 win in the second game. The Warhawks maintained their half-game
lead in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings with the
split.
The Warhawks used a six-run third inning to take a
9-6 lead in the opening game before Pointers reliever Travis Kempf shut
them down the rest of the way. Kempf pitched six and two-thirds innings of
scoreless relief to provide the Pointers time to come back for the win.
UW-Stevens Point trailed 9-8 entering the eighth
inning and Tim Schlosser tied the game with his second home run of the game.
Doug Coe followed with a pinch hit double and moved to third on a wild
pitch. Joel Hojnacki then hit a ground ball to third base and the throw home
was wild, allowing Coe to score the go-ahead run.
Chuck Brehm led off the ninth with a solo homer to
give the Pointers an 11-9 lead and Kempf finished off the Warhawks in the
bottom of the inning. After a one-out single by Storm Gram, UW-Whitewaters
Ben Prather hit a fly ball that was caught at the right field fence, falling
just short of a game-tying home run.
Kempf allowed four hits, while striking out three
and walking one in his first relief appearance of the season.
In the second game, the Pointers trailed 6-3 in
the seventh inning and tied the game with run-scoring singles by Jordan
Zimmermann, Schlosser and Jake Frombach. UW-Stevens Point then took the lead
in the eighth when Brehm led off with a single, moved to second on an errant
pickoff attempt, advanced to third on a fly ball by Ryan Byrnes and scored
on a wild pitch.
The Warhawks tied the game on a sacrifice fly by
Matt DeLong in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Prather was hit by a
pitch and scored from first base when Greg Harder hit a ground ball down the
left field line with the Pointers outfield playing around to right field.
UW-Stevens Point had a one-out hit in the bottom of the ninth, but left the
runner stranded. In fact, the Pointers left 12 runners on base, including
eight in the first three innings.
The loss denied another solid relief outing for
the Pointers as Jeff Zielke allowed just two hits and struck out three in
four innings.
