Pointers
Experience Both Extremes in Split
UW-Stevens Point was at the end of both extremes
on Saturday as the Pointers split a baseball doubleheader at defending NCAA
Division III champion UW-Whitewater.
After being shutout in a 5-0 opening game loss,
the Pointers exploded for a 19-4 victory in the second game to remain within
one-half game of the Warhawks for first place in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.
UW-Stevens Point is now 17-9 overall and 9-4 in
the league, while UW-Whitewater is 19-9 overall and 10-4 in the conference.
The teams play another doubleheader on Sunday in Whitewater.
The Pointers had nine hits in the opening game,
including seven in the first four innings, but were unable to get the clutch
hit to get on the scoreboard. UW-Stevens Point had runners at second and
third with one out in the third and bases loaded with one out in the fourth,
but Warhawks pitcher Mike Jacobson worked out of both jams.
Jacobson had UW-Whitewaters second complete game
of the year, striking out six and walking one. Ben Prather and Jordan Stine
each had three hits for the Warhawks, while Stewart Larsen was
three-for-four for the Pointers. Jordan Zimmermann took the loss for the
Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point used a seven-run second inning to
break open the second game. The Warhawks were unable to field bunts by three
of the Pointers first five batters of the inning and then Ryan Byrnes
capped the frame with a three-run double. UW-Stevens Point tacked on four
more runs in the third for an 11-0 lead as Jake Frombach ripped a two-run
double. Larsen added a two-run double in the sixth and a two-run single in
the seventh to finish with five RBIs. Frombach was three-for-six with four
RBIs, while Zimmermann and Joel Hojnacki also each had three hits.
Josh Perkins struck out seven in the complete game
victory for the Pointers, who beat the Warhawks by the 10-run rule for the
fifth time in the past two seasons. UW-Stevens Point was 5-4 in nine
meetings with UW-Whitewater last year, winning four of those games in seven
innings. |
