Pointers Run Past UW-Superior in Sweep

After slugging seven home runs in the first two games of the series, UW-Stevens Point put on its running shoes on Saturday with 12 stolen bases in a doubleheader sweep of UW-Superior.

Jake Frombach was six-for-six on steals for the day as the Pointers posted an 11-1 win in the opener and 10-0 win in the second game. Both victories ended in seven innings due to the 10-run rule as the Pointers have posted 12 of their 25 wins this season by the mercy rule, including five straight.

The two victories clinched a spot in next weekends Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament in Wisconsin Rapids. The Pointers, who are now 25-14 overall and 14-9 in the WIAC, are the fourth seed and take on top-seeded UW-Whitewater on Friday at 10 a.m. at Witter Field. UW-Oshkosh is the second seed and plays third-seeded UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m.

UW-Stevens Point scored three runs in each of the first two innings as Chuck Brehm hit a two-run homer and Adam Evanoff blasted a solo homer in the first inning. Brehms homer moved him into second place on the schools all-time home run list with the 32nd of his career.

Jordan Zimmermann hit a two-run homer in the fifth and Brehm added a two-run double in the seventh to provide the 10-run margin.

Tim Schlosser was three-for-three for the Pointers, while Frombach was three-for-five with two stolen bases. Travis Kempf pitched a complete game with six strikeouts.

Frombach was also three-for-five in the second game and swiped four bases as the Pointers were 10-for-10 on stolen bases for the game. Doug Coe drew a bases loaded walk in the first inning and the lead stood until the Pointers tallied two runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth. Evanoff highlighted the sixth inning with a three-run double that put the Pointers ahead 7-0. Senior Josh Perkins delivered a run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh in his first career at bat to end the game.

Ryan Hopkins pitched a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks to earn the victory.
