Strong Pitching Leads Pointers to Sweep

UW-Stevens Point received a pair of quality starts from Ryan Hopkins and Brandon Hemstead to win both games of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in Menomonie.

Hopkins pitched six innings allowing four hits while striking out five and giving up just one earned run as the Pointers won 15-5 in seven innings. For UW-Stevens Point it was their third straight victory by the 10-run rule.

UW-Stout got a run in the first and two in the fourth to open up a 3-0 lead before UW-Stevens Point scored 11 unearned runs on three Blue Devil errors in the fifth to take control of the game. Adam Evanoff led off the inning with a walk and came around to score on an error by the catcher when designated hitter Jordan Zimmermann sacrificed. Five runs scored as Jake Frombach and Chuck Brehm added RBI singles as the Pointers batted through the order. Evanoff then hit a bases clearing double on his second trip to the plate in the inning. After a Brandon Scheidler walk, Zimmermann hit his first career home run to complete the 11-run inning as the Pointers sent 14 hitters up to bat in the fifth.

Tim Schlosser hit a three-run home run in the sixth for the Pointers and Stewart Larsen had an RBI single in the seventh to complete the scoring for UW-Stevens Point. Mike Thrun pitched the seventh inning allowing two runs with one strikeout.

UW-Stout scored the first run of the game in game two on an RBI single in the third inning by Tim Schneider. UW-Stevens Point scored three in the fifth and never looked back. Scheidler led off with a single and was followed by Frombach with bunt single. Scheidler scored on a fielder's choice sacrifice by Larsen and Frombach scored on an error by the pitcher. Brehm hit an RBI triple to score Larsen.

After allowing a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Pointers scored a run in every inning the rest of the game. Evanoff had an RBI double in the seventh and an RBI double in the ninth as he hit three-for-seven with five RBI's on the day.

Hemstead threw eight innings giving up one earned run on four hits with one strikeout to improve to 3-0 on the season. Jeff Zielke allowed a hit and struck out one in the ninth.

UW-Stevens Point improved to 9-5 overall and 5-0 in the league with the pair of wins. The Pointers have a pair of doubleheaders this Saturday and Sunday April 8th and 9th at UW-La Crosse.
