Pointers Lose
Leads to Oles and Weather
An already tough week for the UW-Stevens Point
baseball team had an unfortunate ending as the Pointers suffered an extra
inning loss to St. Olaf and then built a big lead in the second game before
it was rained out on Thursday in Port Charlotte, Fla.
UW-Stevens Point lost the opener 4-3 in nine
innings after holding a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning of the scheduled
seven-inning game. The Pointers were ahead 6-0 in the second game with St.
Olaf batting with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning when the skies
opened, forcing cancellation of the game. Both games had been played under
steady rain until that point, leaving field conditions unplayable.
The Pointers concluded their spring trip with a
4-5 record, including four one-run losses.
UW-Stevens Point scored three runs in the first
inning of the opening game as Jake Frombach led off the game with a single
and Nat Richter reached on an error. Doug Coe drilled a two-run double and
later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Schlosser. However, the Pointers were
unable to muster much more offense against Oles starter Eric Tobias, who
allowed only one more hit a sixth-inning double by Coe in seven innings
pitched.
Pointers pitcher Josh Perkins was in control with
six strikeouts through six innings and left with a two-run lead in the
seventh. However, St. Olafs Andrew Schmiesing hit a two-run homer to tie
the game. UW-Stevens Point had runners in scoring position in both the
seventh and eighth innings and was unable to push across the game-winning
run. St. Olaf scored in the ninth when Brian Astry reached on an error, was
sacrificed to second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed
ball.
The Pointers put three runs on the board again in
the first inning of the second game and Jordan Zimmerman blanked the Oles
through three and one-third innings until the heavy rains arrived. |
