Pointers Use Early
Runs to Sweep Green Knights
UW-Stevens Point scored early
and used timely hitting as nine of their 14 runs came after two outs on
Wednesday afternoon as the Pointers swept a non-conference doubleheader
against St. Norbert.
Chuck Brehm singled with
two-outs in the first inning of game one and proceeded to swipe his first of
three stolen bases on the afternoon before scoring on a Doug Coe RBI single
to right field. Coe advanced to second on a fielding error by the right
fielder and scored on an RBI single by first baseman Adam Evanoff.
After two-outs in the third
inning, Coe reached after being hit by a pitch and moved to second on an
Evanoff single to left. Junior outfielder Ryan Byrnes then belted a
three-run home run, his second of the year, to right field to put the
Pointers up 5-0 after three. Evanoff hit a sacrifice fly right in the
fifth that gave UW-Stevens Point a 6-0 lead.
Sophomore Jordan Zimmermann
held St. Norbert scoreless through the fifth before giving up a pair of runs
in the sixth inning. Zimmermann allowed four hits while striking out four in
six innings pitched. Josh Perkins worked the final three innings facing the
minimum to pick up his first career save.
UW-Stevens Point jumped on the
Green Knights early in game two, getting three runs in the first inning.
Jake Frombach led off with a single and moved to second when Tim Schlosser
was hit by a pitch. After a Brehm bunt single to load the bases, Coe was hit
by a pitch to push Frombach across for the score. Schlosser scored when
Evanoff grounded into a double play, advancing Brehm to third before he
scored on a passed ball.
In the third inning, Coe hit a
one-out homerun to right field to give the Pointers a four run lead. Coe
went three-for-four on the day with three RBI's. Frombach hit an RBI single
in the fourth to score Stewart Larsen who reached on a dropped fly ball by
the right fielder.
With a 5-0 cushion heading
into the eighth, Schlosser drew a two-out walk and scored on a double to
fence in left center by Brehm. Coe was then hit by pitch for the second time
in the game and Evanoff walked to load the bases. Byrnes then hit a two RBI
single to right center to complete the scoring and give the Pointers a 8-0
victory. Byrnes batted five-for-seven with five RBI's on the afternoon.
Freshman Tyler Lorenz made his
first career start and earned the victory allowing four hits with nine
strikeouts in six innings pitched. Ryan Hopkins allowed one hit and one walk
while striking out two over the final three innings to notch his first
career save.
