Pointers Fall Out of WIAC Title Chase in Defeats

UW-Stevens Point dropped out of contention for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title after falling to UW-Oshkosh 4-2 and 7-3 on Monday in Oshkosh as the Titans completed a four-game series sweep.

The Pointers were swept in a four-game league series for the first time since the conference went to the current 24-game scheduling format in 2002. They slipped to 20-14 overall and 10-9 in the WIAC, while UW-Oshkosh is now 23-11 overall and 14-6 in the conference.

UW-Oshkosh never trailed in the opener, getting two runs in the first inning and another in the bottom of the second. UW-Stevens Point scored its runs on a run-scoring single by Adam Evanoff in the top of the second and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Byrnes in the third.

Titans relievers Adam Bretl and Adam Roos held the Pointers to two hits after the third inning. Roos entered the game in the sixth and got a double play to end the inning en route to retiring all 10 batters faced. Travis Kempf pitched a complete game and took the loss for the Pointers.

The Pointers took a brief lead in the second game when Joel Hojnacki scored on a failed pickoff attempt in the third inning. However, the Titans Bryan Schwebke answered with a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame to put UW-Oshkosh in control.

Brad Demmin put UW-Oshkosh ahead 7-1 in the fifth with a two-run double as the Titans handed Pointers starter Brandon Hemstead his first loss in seven career decisions. Jim Ziegler came back on one days rest to pitch five innings and earn the win.

Jake Frombach went two-for-three in each game for the Pointers, who play at Marian on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
