UW-Stevens Point
to Host NCAA Baseball Regional
After winning three games in
one day at Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids on Sunday, UW-Stevens Point will
return to the venue next week as the host of the NCAA Division III regional
baseball tournament.
The Pointers, who are 29-15
after beating UW-Whitewater twice and UW-La Crosse once on Sunday, open
regional play against a familiar foe in St. Scholastica on Wednesday, May 17
at 9:30 a.m.
UW-Stevens Point also played the Saints in last year's regional opener and
lost 5-3 before bouncing back for an 18-3 win later in the tournament.
The winner of Wednesday's game
plays top-seeded Ripon at 8 p.m. that night. Other first-round games have second seed St. Olaf
taking on seventh seed Dominican at 1 p.m. and third seed St. Thomas meeting sixth
seed Coe at 4:30 p.m.
It marks the first time
UW-Stevens Point has ever hosted an NCAA regional. The Pointers are making
their eighth tournament appearance, including their seventh in the past 10
years. UW-Stevens Point advanced to the regional finals in its past two
appearances in 2005 and 2002.
Wisconsin Rapids is hosting an
NCAA regional for the first time ever. Witter Field has been the site of the
2005 and 2006 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournaments with
UW-Stevens Point winning the title each year.
