Pointers' Offense
Explodes in Two Victories
The UW-Stevens Point baseball team got its offense
in full gear on Wednesday as the Pointers snapped a four-game losing streak
with a pair of high-scoring victories in Port Charlotte, Fla.
The Pointers routed Millikin 13-2 to open the day
and then outslugged Hope 16-11 to improve to 4-4 for the season. UW-Stevens
Point, which had 15 hits in each game, wraps up its spring trip with a
doubleheader against St. Olaf on Thursday.
Hope scored six runs in the first inning as
UW-Stevens Point was forced to rally from a 9-1 fourth inning deficit.
However, in the bottom of the fourth, the Pointers scored 13 runs and sent
19 batters to the plate. The mark was one short of the school record for
runs in an inning, also done against Hope in 1999.
Doug Coe started the big inning with a two-run
homer and Brandon Scheidler finished the scoring with a grand slam. Stewart
Larsen also delivered a two-run single during the inning, which also
included four hit batters, as the Pointers went ahead 14-9.
Hope cut the lead to 14-11 in the fifth, but
Brandon Hemstead and Jeff Zielke shut the Dutchmen down the rest of the way.
Hemstead worked six and one-third innings in relief, scattering 10 hits and
allowing two earned runs while striking out four. Zielke pitched two
scoreless innings to end the game for his first save.
Larsen added a run-scoring single in the ninth and
finished three-for-four. Jake Frombach was three-for-five and Ben Warwick
was two-for-four. Scheidler and Tim Schlosser each had two hits in the
fourth inning.
Against Millikin, freshman Garret Nix had a strong
collegiate debut, allowing just five hits and two runs over six innings. The
Pointers scored two runs in the second inning as Larsen and Adam Evanoff
each drove in runs. Scheidler gave the Pointers a 4-0 lead in the third with
a two-run double. UW-Stevens Point added four more in the fourth as Chuck
Brehm had a run-scoring single and Schlosser followed with a three-run
double. Brehm added a towering two-run homer in the sixth and Coe had a
two-run double in the seventh. Coe was three-for-five to lead UW-Stevens
Point. |
