Pointers Split
Doubleheader With Eagles
After slugging out 14 runs and 15 hits in a 14-1
opening game victory, the UW-Stevens Point baseball team was silenced to
just five hits in 5-2 second game loss to UW-La Crosse on Sunday in La
Crosse.
The Pointers dropped three of the four games in
the weekend series and fell to 10-8 overall and 6-3 in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Pointers broke open the first game with three
runs in the sixth and seven more in the seventh as Chuck Brehm hit a
three-run homer in the sixth and a two-run blast in the seventh to finish
two-for-four with five RBIs. Brehms seventh inning homer followed a
three-run double by Nat Richter.
Jake Frombach, who had a 20-game hitting streak
snapped on Saturday, went three-for-five in the opening game. Ryan Byrnes
and Brandon Scheidler were each three-for-four, while Doug Coe was
two-for-five.
Jordan Zimmermann had another solid pitching
performance, allowing no earned runs over seven innings with eight
strikeouts and one walk for the win. The sophomore has allowed just two
earned runs all season and has a 0.77 earned run average with 31 strikeouts
against three walks.
UW-La Crosse pitcher Ben Bemis pitched a complete
game for the victory in the nightcap, holding the Pointers without a hit
after the fifth inning and retiring the last 11 batters. Bemis also stymied
UW-Stevens Point last season with a two-hit shutout in a 7-0 Eagles
victory.
The Eagles led 2-0 before the Pointers tied the
game in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Tim Schlosser and a sacrifice
fly by Ben Warwick. UW-La Crosse broke the tie on a three-run homer by Matt
Sampson with one out in the seventh. Ryan Hopkins pitched seven innings and
took the loss for the Pointers.
