Big Innings Hurt
Pointers Against Eagles
UW-Stevens Point couldn't
overcome a pair of big innings as the Pointers dropped a pair of Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games Saturday in La Crosse.
Senior Chuck Brehm hit a first
inning solo home run, his third of the season, to give the Pointers an early
lead in game one of the doubleheader. After the Eagles tied the score 1-1
with an unearned run in the bottom of the first, Tony Peterson hit an RBI
double in the third to give the Eagles a one run lead.
UW-La Crosse loaded the bases
on a single, double and an intentional walk with two outs in the fourth
before John Stetzenbach hit a grand slam to put the Eagles ahead 6-1. Adam
Evanoff was hit by a pitch to lead off the Pointer's ninth inning.
After a Jordan Zimmermann single, Brandon Scheidler hit an RBI single,
scoring Evanoff to complete the scoring.
Ross Benitz threw a complete
game seven-hitter to earn his first career victory. Benitz struck out seven,
while walking only one and allowing two earned runs. Josh Perkins took the
loss for UW-Stevens Point, throwing seven innings allowing five earned runs,
with four walks and seven strikeouts.
UW-Stevens Point also took an
early lead in game two. Evanoff singled with one out and moved to second on
a Zimmermann single. Evanoff came around to score when Tim Schlosser hit
into a fielder's choice and the second baseman committed an error on the
play. Evanoff was three-for-four after batting one-for-three in game one.
UW-La Crosse scored seven
runs, one earned, on five hits, three walks, a hit batter, and an error in the second inning to built a 7-1 lead.
Matt Sampson, Trevor Wallace and Mike Schmidt each had 2 RBI singles in the
frame.
In the fifth inning, Ryan
Byrnes hit a one-out double down the right field line and came around to
score on Stewart Larsen's two-out home run to make it 7-3 Eagles. It was
Larsen's first home run of the season and second of his career. Catcher Ben
Fraser hit a solo home run to give UW-La Crosse an 8-4 lead in the bottom of
the fifth.
Brehm led off the eight with a
single and scored on an Evanoff single to center. With one out, Zimmermann
hit his second home run of the season to draw the Pointers within two at
8-6. Zimmermann went three-for-four in the nightcap.
Winning pitcher Tony Peterson
had an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to complete the scoring at
9-6. Peterson threw seven and one third innings to earn his second victory
of the season. Matt Zurbriggen pitched the ninth for the save.
Garret Nix started the game
for the Pointers but lasted only one and one-third innings. Brandon Hemstead
came out of the bullpen to throw three and two-third innings and Jeff Zielke
made his second appearance of the day to throw the last three innings of the
game for UW-Stevens Point.
The Pointers and Eagles will
play again tomorrow with the doubleheader beginning at 12:00 noon.
