Pointers Awarded
Victory Over Stout on Protest
UW-Stevens Point had to wait a
full night to find out if it was victorious in Saturday's Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game with UW-Stout and finally
officially learned that it had won after a protest ruled in the Pointers'
favor on Sunday morning.
Trailing 11-8 entering the bottom of the ninth
inning, UW-Stevens Point scored three runs to tie the game and had the bases
loaded with two outs when Jake Frombach drew an apparent game-winning base
on balls. However, Ben Warwick, the Pointers runner at second base, began
to leave the baseline and walk towards the pitching mound. When finally
realizing he needed to touch third base, he did advance to third, but the
base umpire ruled Warwick out, leaving the game tied.
UW-Stevens Point protested the decision and the
coaches and umpires huddled for 20 minutes with the rule book. Darkness
prevented the teams from continuing play and an official decision was
finally made on Sunday morning by the league office. The teams are scheduled
to play another doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
UW-Stevens Point won the opening game on Saturday
7-4 and had a 7-2 lead in the fifth inning of the second game before the
Blue Devils rallied to take the lead. |
