Baseball Team Adds 13 Recruits for 2005 Season

UW-Stevens Point baseball coach Pat Bloom has announced 13 Wisconsin athletes who have informed him of their intentions to attend the school in the fall and play for the Pointers.

The group joins a UW-Stevens Point squad that posted its eighth straight 25-win season and placed third in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this past season with a 25-16 overall record.

Four pitchers will join the staff, including Bowler native Mike Rickert, who was 7-2 with a 1.52 ERA and 123 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched. Rickert was the Most Valuable Player of last years Class AA state American Legion tournament while leading Shawano to its second straight championship. He also was featured in Sports Illustrated earlier this season after throwing a perfect game against Iola-Scandinavia.

Brandon Hemstead of DeForest and Jordan Zimmerman of Auburndale both pitched in the WBCA state all-star classic and will attend UW-Stevens Point. Hemstead was 8-1 with a 1.82 ERA and 63 strikeouts this spring, while Zimmerman was named honorable mention all-state after posting a 6-2 record with a 0.50 ERA and 81 strikeouts. Mike Thrun of Franklin is currently competing in his summer high school season and was an honorable mention all-conference performer in 2003.

Ben Warwick of Bay Port, Shane Mommaerts of Menasha and Nic Peters of Kimberly are among three Fox Valley area catchers planning to play for the Pointers. Warwick hit .548 for his Bay Port Legion team in 2003, Mommaerts hit .357 with four homers and 17 RBIs this spring and Peters allowed only one stolen base while posting three homers and 13 RBIs this spring.

On the infield, Jordan Stauber helped De Pere to last years Class AAA state Legion title and a berth in this years WIAA spring state tournament while hitting .272 with six doubles and eight RBIs. Tim Schlosser of Oconomowoc was a second-team all-state performer and played in the state all-star classic after hitting .414 with three home runs and 24 RBIs. Jason Bielejeski of New Berlin Eisenhower is participating in his summer high school season and was a second-team all-conference performer as a junior.

In the outfield, Brandon Schiedler of Chippewa Falls McDonell was an honorable mention all-state selection, hitting .422 with four homers and 22 RBIs this spring while leading the Macks to the WIAA state tournament. Utility player Paul Rotherham hit .561 this spring for Green Bay Notre Dame, while Ben Frombach of Stratford will join his brother Jake at UW-Stevens Point after a spring season that garnered him second-team all-state honors.

Rickert, Zimmerman, Stauber and Schiedler will also take part in the Wisconsin American Legion state all-star game on August 15 at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
