Baseball Team Adds 13 Recruits for 2005 Season
UW-Stevens
Point baseball coach Pat Bloom has announced 13 Wisconsin athletes who have
informed him of their intentions to attend the school in the fall and play
for the Pointers.
The group joins
a UW-Stevens Point squad that posted its eighth straight 25-win season and
placed third in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this past
season with a 25-16 overall record.
Four
pitchers will join the staff, including Bowler native Mike Rickert,
who was 7-2 with a 1.52 ERA and 123 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched.
Rickert was the Most Valuable Player of last year�s Class AA state American
Legion tournament while leading Shawano to its second straight championship.
He also was featured in Sports Illustrated earlier this season after
throwing a perfect game against Iola-Scandinavia.
Brandon
Hemstead of DeForest and Jordan Zimmerman of Auburndale both
pitched in the WBCA state all-star classic and will attend UW-Stevens Point.
Hemstead was 8-1 with a 1.82 ERA and 63 strikeouts this spring, while
Zimmerman was named honorable mention all-state after posting a 6-2 record
with a 0.50 ERA and 81 strikeouts. Mike Thrun of Franklin is
currently competing in his summer high school season and was an honorable
mention all-conference performer in 2003.
Ben
Warwick of Bay
Port, Shane Mommaerts of Menasha and Nic Peters of Kimberly
are among three Fox Valley
area catchers planning to play for the Pointers.
Warwick hit .548 for his Bay Port
Legion team in 2003, Mommaerts hit .357 with four homers and 17 RBI�s this
spring and Peters allowed only one stolen base while posting three homers
and 13 RBI�s this spring.
On the
infield, Jordan Stauber helped De Pere to last year�s Class AAA state
Legion title and a berth in this year�s WIAA spring state tournament while
hitting .272 with six doubles and eight RBI�s. Tim Schlosser of
Oconomowoc was a second-team all-state performer and played in the state
all-star classic after hitting .414 with three home runs and 24 RBI�s.
Jason Bielejeski of New Berlin Eisenhower is participating in his summer
high school season and was a second-team all-conference performer as a
junior.
In the
outfield, Brandon Schiedler of Chippewa Falls McDonell was an
honorable mention all-state selection, hitting .422 with four homers and 22
RBI�s this spring while leading the Macks to the WIAA state tournament.
Utility player Paul Rotherham hit .561 this spring for Green Bay
Notre Dame, while Ben Frombach of Stratford will join his brother
Jake at UW-Stevens Point after a spring season that garnered him second-team
all-state honors.
Rickert,
Zimmerman, Stauber and Schiedler will also take part in the Wisconsin
American Legion state all-star game on August 15 at
Miller
Park in Milwaukee. |
