Pointers Rally
Past UW-Oshkosh in WIAC Tourney
UW-Stevens Point
rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a
come-from-behind victory in the second game of the WIAC Baseball Tournament.
UW-Oshkosh opened up a
4-0 lead after four and a half innings with Ned Yost ripping two doubles and
a triple and scoring three of the Titans. Nat Richter got the Pointers� on
the board in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer off the top of the
outfield fence.
Still trailing 4-2 in
the seventh inning, the Pointers� Ben Warwick hit an RBI double to
centerfield, scoring Richter from first base. UW-Stevens Point added a tying
run in the eighth on a bases loaded passed ball, before Matt Polomis
grounded a single up the middle to score Ryan Jones and Steve Wiczek for a
6-4 lead.
The Pointers were led
at the plate by Richter who went two-for-two with a pair of walks. J.C.
Reinke earned the complete game victory for the Pointers allowing four runs
on 10 Titan hits, while striking out six. Reinke allowed just two hits over
the last four innings.
Yost supplied much of
the Titans� offense with three extra base hits in his first three at-bats.
Bryan Schwebke picked up a pair of singles in a two-for-four night.
Righthander Ben Huffman went the distance for UW-Oshkosh allowing just seven
hits and striking out 10 hitters. The loss was just Huffman�s sixth setback
in 31 career decisions.
UW-Stevens Point will advance to face UW-Whitewater at 1:00 p.m. on
Saturday. The Titans will play UW-Platteville in an elimination game at
10:00 p.m. The schedule for the WIAC tournament was delayed by five hours on
Friday due to rain. |
