Pointers Extend Win Streak With Sweep of Titans

UW-Stevens Point extended its winning streak to 12 straight games with a perfect combination of solid hitting and pitching in a doubleheader sweep of UW-Oshkosh Wednesday at University Field.

The Pointers got a complete game performance from J.C. Reinke in a 5-1 opening game victory and four scoreless innings from Matt Polomis while hitting three three-run home runs in a 16-4 triumph in the nightcap. It marked the 10th time in the last 11 games that the Pointers have scored in double figures and the sixth time in nine games that they have won a game by the 10-run rule.

UW-Stevens Point is now 18-3 overall and 10-2 in the WIAC, while ninth-ranked UW-Oshkosh fell to 16-4 overall and 5-3 in the league.

The Pointers used big early innings to take control in each game. In the opener, Jake Frombach and Nat Richter opened the game with back-to-back doubles and Steve Wiczek added a run-scoring single as the Pointers took a 2-0 lead. Ryan Jones hit a three-run homer in the second inning and it was all the offense the Pointers needed in support of Reinke, who had his first career nine inning complete game.

The senior lefthander struck out eight and scattered seven hits to improve to 3-0 for the season. UW-Oshkosh senior Ben Huffman also went the distance, allowing just one hit after the second inning and striking out at least one batter every inning to finish with a career-high 14 strikeouts.

In the second game, the Pointers scored four runs in the first inning after two outs and nobody on base as Chuck Brehm had a run-scoring single and Ryan Byrnes lofted a three-run homer to centerfield.

UW-Oshkosh pulled to within 5-4 in the third on solo home runs by Scott Bolcoa and Ned Yost, but Polomis shut down the Titans from that point. The senior, making just his fifth career appearance, allowed only two hits to earn the victory in relief.

UW-Stevens Point scored three runs in the fourth for an 8-4 cushion and then got three-run homers from Joel Hojnacki in the sixth and Steve Wiczek in the seventh to put the game away.
