Reinke and Wiczek Sweep WIAC Baseball Player of the Week Honors
UW-Stevens Point landed both the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference pitcher and position player of the week awards as J.C. Reinke and
Steve Wiczek were both selected after the Pointers� series split with
top-ranked UW-Whitewater.
Reinke, a senior from Bonduel, threw his second straight shutout and
allowed just two hits to the nation�s top hitting team in a 10-0 Pointers�
victory. Reinke struck out seven and walked two in pitching his fourth
complete game in his last five outings.
Wiczek, a senior designated hitter from Stevens Point, hit .500 for the
week with seven hits in 14 at-bats. He slugged a pair of home runs and
finished with six runs scored and five RBI�s. Wiczek finished the regular
season with the top batting average in the WIAC at .474 along with 60 RBI�s
and 14 home runs.
Baseball Team Ranked 10th in NCAA Division III Poll
Following a series split with the nation�s top-ranked team, UW-Stevens Point
held onto its top 10 spot in the NCAA Division III rankings, checking in at
10th in this week�s poll by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
The Pointers, now 32-8 overall, were ranked ninth in the most recent
poll. They posted 10-0 and 21-8 wins over top-ranked UW-Whitewater last
weekend before the Warhawks evened the series with 5-3 and 5-0 wins on
Saturday. UW-Whitewater held onto the top spot with a 36-4 overall record.
The teams may see each other again this weekend in the WIAC tournament
in Wisconsin Rapids. UW-Stevens Point opens the postseason by taking on
UW-Oshkosh on Friday at 1 p.m. UW-Whitewater meets UW-Platteville in the
other opening round game on Friday at 10 a.m. |
