Pointers Conclude Trip With Sweep of
Carthage
The UW-Stevens Point baseball
team capped off a successful trip to Port Charlotte, Fla. by sweeping a pair
of games from 20th-ranked Carthage 11-5 and 6-4 on Thursday. The Pointers
end their spring break trip with a 6-1 record.
After spotting the Redmen a
run in the top of the first inning in the opening game, UW-Stevens Point
struck for six runs in the bottom of the frame. Ryan Jones crushed a
three-run homer before Chuck Brehm had a run-scoring double. The Pointers
loaded the bases as Nat Richter was hit by a pitch and Jake Frombach drew an
RBI walk.
The runs were all the Pointers
would need in support of reliever Zac Peterson, who allowed one run in two
and two-thirds innings. Brehm finished three-for-four and Richter was
two-for-three at the plate.
UW-Stevens Point held off a
late Carthage rally in the second game for the sweep. After the Pointers had
a three-run fourth inning and scored another in the fifth, Carthage scored
two runs in the bottom of the sixth and had the bases loaded against
reliever Kevin Pankow when Brehm made a diving catch in left-centerfield to
end the threat. UW-Stevens Point added two runs in the top of the seventh
and Pankow worked out of another jam in the bottom of the inning to earn the
save. J.C. Reinke pitched five innings for the victory.
It was the first time the
in-state rivals have met since 1997 at the Division III World Series in
Salem, Va. when Pointers' coach Pat Bloom played for Carthage in the
Redmen's 12-1 win.
The Pointers are scheduled to
host ninth-ranked UW-Oshkosh in their home opener on Wednesday at noon.
