WIAC Women’s Soccer Championships – Oct. 30, 1999

UW-Stevens Point 1, UW-La Crosse 0 (ot)

Marie Muhvic scored 12:47 into sudden-death overtime to lead the UW-Stevens Point women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UW-La Crosse and its seventh Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in eight years Saturday in Stevens Point.

The victory lifted the Pointers to 17-3 overall as UW-Stevens Point earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Pointers, who are making their sixth national tournament appearance in seven years, will learn of their first round pairing late Sunday night.

In overtime, UW-Stevens Point midfielder Micky Jacob dribbled to the top of the penalty box and sent a pass into Muhvic, who broke inside the Eagles’ defense and slid the winning goal to the left of diving Eagles’ goalie Jessica Gammey.

The goal for Muhvic was her single-season school record 22nd of the season. The junior scored 21 goals last season. She finished the WIAC tournament with six goals in three games.

Both teams had several chances to score in regulation as UW-Stevens Point hit the crossbar three times and UW-La Crosse hit one crossbar. The Pointers outshot the Eagles 23-8, including a 17-3 margin in the second half. Gammey also made several big saves, finishing with seven stops for the match.

UW-Stevens Point is now 21-1 all-time in WIAC tournament games and has won 14 consecutive games at home. The Pointers finished the season allowing just three goals in their last 14 matches.
