Katie Hassemer
On April 27 and 28, 2006 the famous artists/activists the Guerrilla Girls were guests of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The evening of Thursday April 27th the gorilla-masked women gave an hour and a half presentation to an audience of around 350 people in Jenkins Theater. The following day they ran two different activist workshops for about 25 people total. Senior BFA art student, Katie Hassemer, was the main organizer of these events from idea to execution. She individually went across campus garnering support and enthusiasm for this very special engagement at UWSP. Needing to raise nearly $10,000 to bring the Guerrilla Girls here, she got support from a number of student organizations, academic departments, colleges and offices on campus, totaling over 20 different sponsors. Beyond fundraising, she also worked on scheduling, public relations, promotion, and volunteer organization. "Working with the Guerrilla Girls was an amazing experience. Their message of inequality and discrimination effect everyone, and I'm so glad that so many people were able to access their message here in Stevens Point."
