About
John O. Smith began teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1998. Before coming to UWSP, he taught courses in graphic design and computer graphics at the University of Iowa, where he received his MFA in 1995.
His approach to teaching is based on creating and facilitating experiences that lead to dialog. He is passionate about developing curriculum that challenges students to ask questions, think critically, and communicate concepts visually and verbally. Courses, projects, and discussions focus on design as a process, and prepare students to succeed professionally in the graphic design industry, developing and following their own interests within this exciting field.
Professor Smith is also the faculty coordinator for the UWSP student chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). In this role, he is dedicated to increasing students' creative growth through educational and professional opportunities. Group events have included travel to design conferences and portfolio reviews, hosting visiting designers and artists, coordinating workshops and design discussions, and developing and hosting an annual design conference at UWSP.
Professor Smith also works professionally as a graphic designer and an artist. His creative work has been awarded, exhibited, and collected on a regional and national level.
