Introduction
The
Department of Theatre and Dance offers a
variety of curricular options for the
student wishing to major in theatre with an
emphasis in design/technology. Students may
pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor
of Science (BS) degree as a "general
theatre" major with an emphasis in
design/technology. They may also pursue the
Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in
design/technology. The focus of the BA and
BS degree option is on acquiring a breadth
of knowledge and skill in various aspects of
the theatre. The BFA degree option
emphasizes greater specialization in
design/technology and is designed for the
student who has serious intentions of
pursuing theatre design and/or technology as
a profession.
Why Study Design/Technology at UWSP?
Students
admitted to the BFA Design/Technology
program must complete 78 credits. Thirty are
in design/tech, including Introduction to
Theatrical Design, Scene Design I, Lighting
Design I, Costume Design I, Make-up Design,
Theatrical Rendering, Computer-Aided Design
for the Stage, Scene Painting, and Costume
Crafts. This program is among the few in the
nation to offer undergraduate courses in
computer-aided design and computer design
technology.
Theatre students at UWSP are actively and
consistently exposed to dance and musical
theatre. This enriches the student's
knowledge in a variety of performing arts.
The Department of Theatre and Dance has a
regional and national reputation for
producing outstanding theatrical productions
and training students to be highly qualified
to compete in the professional theatre.
Admission
Admission to the BA/BS major
with a Design/Technology
emphasis or BFA major in
Design/Technology
requires that the student
successfully complete an
interview.
Prospective students must apply
to the department, as well as
the university, and be admitted
to UWSP as full-time students
before their assigned interview
date. Applications for an
interview date can be found at
our website:www.uwsp.edu/theatre-dance/
or by contacting the Department
of Theatre and Dance.
Departmental scholarships are
awarded on the basis of the
interview.
Employment Opportunities
Design and Technology students
are encouraged to apply for
summer employment at theatres
throughout the country. These
experiences add to a student's
resume and increase job
possibilities upon graduation.
UWSP design/technology graduates
find frequent employment in
educational and professional
theatres, as well as theme parks
and less traditional venues.
Many students choose to continue
their education in a graduate
program, usually pursuing a
Master of Fine Arts degree.
Design/Technology Opportunities
The department offers an active
production schedule. Five
Mainstage productions are
produced annually, as well as a
number of studio productions.
Students have the opportunity to
work in the design and technical
areas of all of these
productions. These include
straight plays, musicals, and
dance concerts. Students are
also actively involved with a
number of performances produced
by PLAYERS, the student theatre
organization.
