Why Study Music at UW-Stevens Point?
The Music
Department at UW-Stevens Point is large enough to ensure
a variety of quality ensemble experiences, yet small
enough to allow for small class sizes and a great deal
of individual attention. The department is committed to
excellence in its advising program, in which faculty
advisors are assisted by upper-class student peer
advisors. The integration of computer and recording
technology with aural, visual and kinesthetic teaching
techniques and the use of the students’ instruments in
the classroom makes the musicianship (music theory)
curriculum unique in the field.
Opportunities for Advanced Study
UWSP graduates
regularly gain entry into top graduate programs around
the country. Such graduate study prepares the student
for employment as a professional musician and/or a
college or university instructor.
Department Features
The faculty
includes resident artist-teachers of piano, voice and
all band and orchestral instruments, as well as
specialists in music education, instrumental conducting,
choral conducting, music theory and composition, music
history and literature and jazz studies. A
state-of-the-art Computer Music Center, Portable
Practice Units featuring digital multi-track
recording/playback capability, and four Yamaha
Disklaviers are a technological mix unique in the state,
and perhaps anywhere.
High School Preparation
For students
planning to major in music it is recommended they study
music theory if it is offered at their high schools and
take private lessons if available. Piano study is
recommended for non-pianists. It is always helpful and
strongly recommended for students considering any music
degree to make it a priority to listen to good
recordings of classical music.
Employment Opportunities
UWSP graduates
in Music Education have enjoyed nearly 100% placement
for many years. Graduates in other degree tracks have
found employment as college or university teachers
(after graduate study) or in the music industry in
retailing, publishing, technology, software development,
etc.

NOTES:
- Acceptance into the Department of Music as a
music major or minor is by audition.
- The above outline is generally accurate;
however, there are minor differences among the
various music degree programs. More specific
information is available from the Department of
Music.
- A separate admission procedure is required for
acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Music
Education degree program. This procedure usually
takes place at the end of the third semester and
involves making acceptable progress on the major
instrument, submitting an essay and having an
interview with the Music Education faculty.
- A second audition is required for acceptance
into the Bachelor of Music in Applied Music
(performance) degree program. This usually takes
place at the end of the freshman year.
