Introduction
The traditional history major and minor are designed for students preparing to teach and for those interested in such fields as law and library science. The department requires students to take coursework in U.S., European, and world history. Students may also take a concentration in Minority and Ethnic Studies.

Why Study History at UW-Stevens Point?
The faculty members in the History Department cover the history of the world and bring a broad range of specializations to course offerings. Among the more unusual courses are those in U.S. environmental history, war and propaganda in the twentieth century, the history of Africans, the history of U.S. feminism, oral history, and the history of Eastern Europe. We also administer the International Studies major and minor, as well as a minor in Peace Studies.

High School Preparation
Students interested in history should pursue a well-rounded program in high school; the study of history, literature, the social sciences, the sciences, and a foreign language provides a solid foundation for engaging in historical inquiry. Students may earn up to 12 college credits by obtaining an appropriate score on the Advanced Placement examination in history.

Department Features
The Learning Resources Center has good library holdings in history as well as specialized holdings such as the Government Documents Collection. In addition, the Universal Borrowing System among institutions in Wisconsin offers undergraduates quick and easy access to research materials.

Employment Opportunity
Many history majors or minors find employment in teaching, but they can appropriately seek jobs in related fields such as the U.S. Foreign Service or in government. With a few courses in business and economics, a history major can enter the business world, and history is one of the traditional majors for professional study in law, theology, and library science. A history minor enhances the teaching possibilities for students majoring in other social science fields, in international studies or in foreign languages.
