Introduction
General Studies is an
interdisciplinary major that brings
together courses from many different
fields of study within the liberal arts.
Through exposure to a wide variety of
subjects, you will become a more
complete, educated citizen of the world
and will build a base of knowledge and a
core of skills that serve many careers.
The General studies major has two
options, Contemporary America and
Exploring the World of Work. Each option
requires between 6-18 credits of
fundamental courses which focus on
communication and other workplace
skills. In addition, the Contemporary
America option consists of courses in
the social sciences and the humanities.
In the Exploring the Contemporary World
of Work option, students choose an
emphasis in Business, International
Studies, Language, Government or
Psychology/Sociology. Both options
require a Senior Experience which
provides an opportunity to apply
expertise learned in the major and
encourages students to become actively
involved in either the discipline or the
community.
Why Study General Studies at UW-Stevens Point?
The General
Studies major allows you to develop skills and abilities
in many professional fields, such as communication,
technology, critical thinking and problem-solving,
contemporary issues, citizenship, self-development and
lifelong learning.
High School Preparation
No specific
preparation is required; however courses that prepare
you for the rigors of reading, writing and thinking at
the college level are recommended.
Department Features
The General
Studies major is administered by the Student Academic
Advising Center. The professional academic advisors who
staff the Center are specifically trained to assist
General Studies students. They constantly update
themselves on academic information, university programs
and courses of study, and available resources and
services. A student may schedule an appointment at any
time by calling 346-3361 or by stopping in Room 103 of
the Student Services Building.
Employment Opportunity
Many career
fields do not require a specific major. Rather they seek
candidates who hold solid critical thinking,
presentation and social skills, as well as entry-level
skills specific to the job. General Studies helps you
develop widely transferable skills as well as the
flexibility to investigate various avenues of
career-specific skills.
