Why Study Communication at
UW-Stevens Point?
The Division of Communication offers a
major in communication that prepares students for a wide variety of careers
such as broadcasting, journalism, public relations, and business. A major in
communication is both theoretical and career-oriented. In preparation for
employment, we encourage majors to participate in one or more of the student
organizations in the Division. These include the student television and
radio stations and the university newspaper, but also activities and
organizations relating to areas like organizational communication and public
relations. These organizations provide practical communication experience
and enhance job opportunities after graduation through their many networking
opportunities.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates with degrees in Communication
from UW-Stevens Point enjoy a high employment placement record in a wide
variety of occupational fields. Communication graduates also succeed in
pursuing graduate degrees in communication. Our graduates find work in
insurance, print and broadcast media, travel, public relations agencies,
private industry, retail outlets, non-profit agencies, and government.
Department Features
Sixteen full-time faculty members teach in
the Division of Communication and represent a variety of areas in the field.
Most possess the Ph.D. and are graduates of outstanding communication
graduate schools in the United States and abroad. Many have backgrounds in
careers such as business, law, industry, or the media, and actively pursue
research or consulting projects to keep current. We are a faculty of
award-winning teachers who promote and sustain a high quality of teaching
within the Division. Our students enjoy an informal and helpful relationship
with faculty. The Division also draws on the expertise of communication
professionals in the community to supplement its practical and
career-oriented curriculum.
Our Facilities
The Communication Arts Center offers
outstanding facilities for teaching. Our classrooms incorporate
state-of-the-art technology in an effort to stay on the cutting edge
technically. We also host a television studio, cinema center, newspaper
production facilities, radio station, student video operations, and computer
laboratory with access to the UW-Stevens Point Campus Network System.
High School Preparation
Students interested in a major or minor in
communication should take a broad range of college preparatory work focusing
on courses in speech communication, English, the arts and humanities.
Internship Program
Because we prize our strong placement
record, we support an active internship program that assists students in
acquiring practical work experience in their chosen career field before
graduation.
Academic Standards
Communication is a limited-enrollment
major. Interested students must meet with a Division representative to
declare an intent to pursue the major or minor. Students who wish to major
in Communication must first take 7-13 credits of selected communication
courses, achieve a minimum 2.75 GPA for those courses and complete an
application. In order to graduate with a communication major or minor, a
student must achieve and maintain a 2.75 grade point average (on a
four-point scale) for all communication classes taken. Courses with a grade
below C- do not count toward the major or minor.
