Program Description
The focus of the Family and Consumer
Sciences major is upon helping youth and adults build strong families,
address family challenges and responsibilities, and prepare for family and
consumer-related careers. These programs are proactive as they address
serious family concerns before, rather than after, they occur.
The following options are available:
High School Preparation
To prepare for a major in Family and
Consumer Sciences, high school students should focus on courses in sciences,
mathematics, psychology, sociology, and family and consumer education.
Department Features
Faculty members represent the fields of
human development, adult education, and family and consumer education and
have been active in curricular development, research, publications in
professional journals, and in-service programs. Curricular materials have
been developed which are being used by teachers nationwide.
Field Experiences
Teacher Education option majors receive
this experience by way of a full semester of student teaching. Each
individual in the program is assigned to either a middle school or a junior
high school and a secondary school. All individuals graduating with an FCS
major receive hands-on experience before they complete their program of
study.
UWSP Graduates of Family &
Consumer Sciences (Teacher Education Option) at Work
Graduates might choose to teach in a
middle, junior high, or senior high school. In addition, they are prepared
for positions in technical institutions or in community colleges.
