Introduction
As the field of computing has grown, the computing major has grown with it. The Computer Information Systems major at UWSP combines a wide range of classroom work with practical experience that consistently leads to 100% job placement of its graduates.

Why Study Computing at UW-Stevens Point?
The field of computing is developing so rapidly it is important that all students receive training in all areas of the field. For that reason, UWSP computer majors not only study computer programming, but systems analysis, network administration, and database development. Your fourth year you will be working in the field developing a computer system for a company or community organization in the Stevens Point area. You will graduate with both academic training and practical experience.

High School Preparation
Build a good background in science, math, and computers in high school. If you can, take the AP test in Java or learn the Java language on your own. We give advanced placement and credit for students who enter with good programming skills. If your high school does not offer many computer courses, concentrate on developing both your mathematical and writing skills. You will need both in the computing field.

Department Features
UWSP has long had a technology focus. Computer networks link all the rooms in the residence halls, and computer labs exist in every classroom building. So computer access is easy. So is access to professionals in the field. Paid internships, arranged with the assistance of the department, are a part of many students' programs.

Employment Opportunity
Given all the technology in use in the world, it should be no surprise that computing majors have an easy time finding employment. Most students have jobs lined up before graduation. A growing number of companies hire students during the summer both to give students more computer experience, and to attract students to permanent jobs after graduation. Starting salaries range from $38,000 to $54,000.
