A Message from UW System President Kevin Reilly on Interim Chancellor Mark Nook

UW-Stevens Point will soon be entering a new era of campus leadership.  I want to thank Chancellor Bunnell for her service to the campus and the UW System.  While there understandably may be some uncertainty about what lies ahead, I am convinced there is also great promise for the future.

As you know, I have appointed Provost Mark Nook to serve as Interim Chancellor, effective June 1.  I am convinced that his experience makes him well suited to lead UW-Stevens Point in this time of transition.

I want to assure you that every effort will be made to maintain the positive momentum that UW-Stevens Point has generated in recent years.  I fully expect that the universitys pursuit of the objectives outlined in the Campus Master Plan and the Growth Agenda will continue, as will the fulfillment of UW-Stevens Points Vision 2015.

My impression is that Mark has earned the respect and admiration of his peers and colleagues across the UW System.  His thoughtfulness, fairness, and progressive eye on the future are among the attributes that make him the appropriate person to step into this new role at UW-Stevens Point.

Throughout his career, Mark has been centrally involved in a wide range of academic affairs, student affairs, community relations, and governance leadership roles.  He has an impressive record of research and for 14 years he served as the director of the St. Cloud State University Observatory and Planetarium.

Mark holds a Ph.D. in astronomy from UW-Madison.  He moved from the faculty at St. Cloud State, where he chaired the physics, astronomy, and engineering department, to the position of Dean of Undergraduate Studies before coming to Stevens Point as Provost in 2007.

Marks connection to UW-Stevens Point also extends beyond the job.  Mark and his wife Cheryl's daughter is a UW-Stevens Point alumna and one of their sons is currently a student there.

I know that you share my conviction that we will all continue to work together to keep UW-Stevens Point moving toward the bright future that lies ahead.
