Introductory Meeting
Katie Jore & Todd Huspeni

While this is not part of the formal presentation, in the past new faculty and staff would like to know more about the characteristics of the incoming class of first year students. Recently, we changed the survey instrument, and until results are available from that survey, we are linking to a previous year's survey results (Fall 2012).

Creating a Safe Zone in the Classroom: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity
Yan Liao, John Peralta, Cierra Reed, Ron Strege

Often educators are afraid to begin a conversation on diversity issues because they have had a bad experience or feel they will say something wrong or hurtful. Workshop participants will learn that they are not alone in their fears and that all of us lack a "model" of how to begin this type of conversation and will probably hurt or anger each other. The most important ingredient is our sincerity and our willingness to learn and understand each other. At this interactive session, participants will have the opportunity to discuss the challenges and fears they have faced or believe they will face in the process of enhancing inclusivity in the work they do at UWSP and to learn a number of strategies that can be utilized to enhance the safety of the classroom environment for all. Indeed, through understanding the barriers we may face and the gateways we can use in meeting the challenges of inclusivity, we can become better for all of our students and colleagues.
