Mission Statement
To coordinate the collection, processing and disposal of unneeded or
unused surplus property generated on the UWSP campus or from other state agencies.
Every effort will be made to accomplish this in an environmentally and fiscally
responsible manner beneficial to both our campus and community.
History of the Surplus Property Office
The Surplus Property Office was started in June of 1995. This was the culmination
of the efforts of both Gerald Burling of the procurement office and Larry Beck,
Director of Facility Services. The Surplus Property Office manager works directly
for the Director of Facility Services.
The goal was to handle the large amount of university property that each year was
catalogued as either obsolete, unusable in present programs, overstock or outdated.
From the beginning, the Surplus Property Office was charged with disposing any
and all items in the most environmentally and cost efficient manner possible. This
was done in order to reduce the cost to the university for disposal and to return
a small measure of the taxpayer's dollars to the budgets of the corresponding departments
on campus.
The Surplus Property Office is operated by one full-time employee and a staff of
student employees.
The first sale was held on a Friday afternoon in June of 1995 and has been held
most Fridays up to the present day. Special sales have been held on Saturdays and
will continue in the future as the need dictates.
In 1996, a program of extending items to schools and non-profit organizations was
started. This involved personal visits,
email notifications and electronic faxes on a regular basis.
Through various federal and state programs, surplus items from the University of
Wisconsin Stevens Point have ended up in such places as Mexico, Bulgaria,
Nicaragua, the West Indies, St. Thomas and other islands located in the Caribbean.
The program has grown to not only serve the University, but also many other state
or federal entities that require the disposal of surplus property.
