CONFERENCES
Every semester, juniors and seniors, are encouraged to attend various conferences. This past February students attended the Lake States TAPPI Conference in Green Bay. This gives the students a chance to meet industry people as well as learn about different topics. In addition, all the seniors attend the annual meeting held at the Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, WI. Students become involved with National TAPPI and Lake States TAPPI through these activities. The student chapter partially reimburses students who attend. For upcoming conferences see the Coming Events page below.
FRESHMAN ORIENTATION
During the first couple weeks of every year, a informal meeting is held for freshman as an introduction and welcome to the UWSP Paper Science Department. The faculty and seniors introduce themselves and give background information and words of wisdom. After the introductions, there is a question and answer period, followed by a social hour This activity gives freshman the opportunity to meet with faculty, seniors, and also with each other while getting their questions answered.
COOP INTERVIEW MEETING
After sophomore year, the majority of Paper Science students participate in a coop program which enables them to work in an industry environment. To help prepare these students for on-campus recruiting, a night is designated for seniors to give advice and answer questions on interviewing. Seniors advise on topics like attire, interview questions, and the overall interview process. This gives sophomores some insight into the exciting world of interviewing.
STUDENT CHAPTER FUND-RAISING
Students get involved in many different fund-raisers to help sponsor the various events throughout the year. Annual sales of Paper Science golf shirts, sweat shirts, and T-shirts head up the fund-raisers. Getting credit card applications filled out, selling brats and subs, and phonathons have also been good money makers. Involvement in these fund-raisers tend to become events in themselves.
CAMPUS OPEN HOUSE
In the spring of every year, the entire UWSP campus puts on an open house, allowing anyone interested to tour the campus and meet with faculty. As part of this, students help show off the Paper Science department and attempt to answer the various questions asked. This includes giving tours of the New Explorer pilot paper machine, as well as the computer and testing labs. A table is also set up to promote Paper Express, where anyone interested can make their own handsheet. This is a good opportunity to inform the public on our department.
COLLEGE DAYS FOR KIDS
As part of a university-wide program, Paper Science students help introduce gifted sixth-graders to the department and the paper industry in general. Two groups of about fifteen kids meet two consecutive weeks with the Paper Science students. During this time, the kids are shown videos on the paper industry, and also tour the paper machine and computer and testing labs. Promoting the paper industry to exceptional students is an excellent benefit of this program.
PICNICS AND GOLF
OUTINGS
![]()
Every spring and fall, the paper science student chapter holds a picnic and a golf outing. This is a chance for all the students, from freshmen to seniors, to get together outside of school, meet other people within the major, and have fun. In the morning, students form a foursome and get together at a local golf course (no experience required!!). A competition is held for longest putt, longest drive, and closest to the hole. Prizes are awarded to the winners. In the afternoon, everyone meets for food and games at a local park. Brats and hamburgers are grilled while people play football, volleyball, and horseshoes. The next picnic and golf outing will be held in the Spring of 2005. Updates as to time and location will be posted on paper science student chapter web page. Keep checking it out!
SENIOR TALK NIGHT
Senior Talk Night is held at the University Center during the Fall Semester. This gives students, especially freshmen, a chance to ask seniors questions. This gives seniors the chance to help other students out and to share their experiences as to what types of classes they should be taking, who are the good professors, and also answer any questions pertaining to coops and internships. This helps new students so they know what to expect from the classes and what classes are more beneficial.
SENIOR ROAST
This is an annual activity held in the spring of the year right before the seniors graduate. It gives a chance for the seniors to get together one last time as a group before heading off into the "real world." All students are invited to listen to seniors "roasting" each other with stories and anecdotes about the seniors. Each senior gets their turn in the "hot spot" while others students relate and reminisce. It is a hilariously good time that is enjoyed by everyone.
