The Standard Campus Load
What is the Standard Campus Load (SCL)?
The SCL is a standard set of software products and a particular release of
the operating system (e.g. Windows XP ) configured to run on campus computers.
Why do we use a SCL?
We use a SCL to efficiently deliver the best possible environment that will
meet the needs of most customers. When a standard is used on campus machines it
is much easier to facilitate upgrades, provide virus protection, and assure
network delivered applications will work (e.g. programs in Network Menu). It
also allows the University to function with a smaller support staff to customer
ratio and allows those support staff to be better equipped to fix problems and
answer questions.
What is the Student Lab load and how does it compare with the SCL?
The Student Computer Labs have a version of the SCL that has been "tweaked"
to allow one machine to serve different and multiple people more efficiently.
Many problems with lab computers can be fixed in the matter of minutes by
refreshing the Lab Load on the machine. The SCL and the Lab Load are maintained
to be extremely similar so teaching staff can do the same thing students do in
the labs.
What is the current SCL?
Currently the SCL includes the Windows XP operating system, Symantec
Anti-Virus virus protection, Internet Explorer, and Office 2002. We are
currently in the process of upgrading workstations to Office 2003.
There are still some campus computers running older versions of a SCL, for
example Windows 2000 with Office 2000 but these are being phased out as machines
are replaced.
