RE: Dial-up Access for Retired Personnel

In recent years, a number of retired members of the UWSP community have requested dial-up access to the Internet through the Office of Information Technology at the University. Recognizing that our retirees receive only a handful of privileges for their many years of dedicated service, Information Technology has routinely granted these requests.

Unfortunately, as the number of requests for dial-up access has grown among our retirees, we increasingly find ourselves offering a service that may unfairly compete with the private sector. Indeed, we have been advised by System Legal Counsel that such competition would be difficult to defend if the University were to be challenged in court by private Internet service providers. We have also been told that it would be difficult to defend the use of State resources for this purpose.

For these reasons, we must discontinue offering dial-up access to individuals who retire from UWSP. Therefore, if asked about this privilege as part of a "retirement package," please indicate that it is not available. However, those few retirees who currently have dial-up access will be allowed to maintain their network connection.

While we are unable to continue offering free dial-up access to people who retire from UWSP, we do plan to continue our policy of free Internet access for the general public. This service is available through computers housed on the University campus when such use does not interfere with student access. Any adult may apply for a log-in identification for campus computer use at the Information Technology Office, 026 LRC. In addition, UWSP retirees may continue to use UWSP email addresses if they so choose. It is only dial-up access for retired personnel that will be discontinued at this time.
