Computer Naming Conventions for the UWSP Network


In order to troubleshoot network problems and provide timely service, it is vital to be able to quickly identify computers that are on the campus network. 

All computer names on the campus network must use the following conventions.  Computers not following standard naming conventions may be removed from the network at the discretion of Network Management staff.

    Faculty/staff/student PC’s located in business areas (offices, labs, etc.) "c" +  first 7 letters of user name.
      Examples: jsmith’s pc becomes cjsmith or spointer’s pc becomes cspointe
    Faculty/staff/student Macs located in business areas (offices, labs, etc.)  "m" + first 7 letters of user name.
      Examples: jsmith’s macintosh becomes mjsmith or spointer’s macintosh becomes mspointe
    Faculty/staff/student laptops  located in business areas (offices, labs, etc.) "l" (as in Larry) +  first 7 letters of user name.
      Examples: jsmith’s laptop becomes ljsmith or lpointer’s laptop becomes lspointe
    Faculty/staff machines connecting through Remote Access Service (RAS)  "h" + first 7 letters of user name.
      Examples: jsmith’s RAS computer becomes hjsmith or spointer’s RAS computer hspointe
    Student PC's connecting through ResNet in the Residence Halls   "c" + full  user name.
      Examples: jsmit111’s ResNet computer becomes cjsmit111 or spoin222s ResNet computer cspoin222
    Student Macs connecting through ResNet in the Residence Halls   "m" + full user name.
      Examples: jsmith’s macintosh becomes mjsmit111 or spointer’s macintosh becomes mspoin222
    Personally owned computers (not UWSP owned)* connecting to the network from an on campus jack  "c" + + full  user name. Servers, lab machines, or machines used jointly by groups of people Servers should either be named for the department they belong to or for the room they are in.
      Examples: If the English department has a server in CCC 451, it could be called engserv, 451ccc, 451eng. If Student Government has a computer they use in UC 123, it could be called 123uc, 123sga. If Student Government has multiple computers in UC 123, they could be called 123uc1, 123uc12, or 123sga1, 123sga2. If 10 grad students are all using a computer in com 123, it could be called 123com.
