Recommended Personal Computer Configurations
When students, faculty, and staff are looking for new personal
computers, they often contact IT for advice on their purchase. While
IT does not sell computers to users for personal use, we can give
you a few basic ideas on things to consider when making your
purchase.
If you are looking for where to buy computers, we do
offer links to certain
hardware providers who have special pricing for UWSP students
and employees.

Additional Recommendations
Cables
You may also need to purchase accessories that are not included with a
new computer purchase such as a printer cable, DVI cable for
your monitor, and surge protector.
Internet Access
If you have a dial-up connection to the Internet, be sure to
purchase a computer with a phone modem.
Operating Systems
We support computers running Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X (10.4 or
higher) on campus. PCs should have all current service packs and updates
installed.
Software
As a UWSP student, faculty or staff member, you are entitled to
use our license of
Symantec Antivirus on your home computer at no
charge. You do
NOT need to purchase antivirus software with your new computer.
Microsoft Office, Adobe and other software are available to
students,
faculty and staff at a greatly
reduced price compared to what you will pay from a computer vendor.
Warranty on New Computers
Most retail computers have a 1 year warranty; we suggest you
upgrade the manufacturer's warranty to at least 3 years.
Note: Laptop warranties generally do not cover screen damage,
such as cracking. Check with the manufacturer to see if they
offer accidental damage coverage in lieu of the standard warranty.
