NAACLS Medical Technologists are prepared in the clinical areas of Microbiology, Immunology, Hematology, Immunohematology, Chemistry, Molecular Pathology, Body Fluid Analysis, and Laboratory Management. They provide the essential testing to diagnose, monitor, and treat patients. They also develop test procedures, assure quality performance, and conduct research. Students seeking a career in Medical Technology will earn a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology Option. The program requires three to four years of academic courses on the UWSP campus, followed by a clinical practicum in a hospital-based accredited clinical laboratory. In the spring of the sophomore year, students apply to the professional program. During the first semester of the professional program, students apply to one or more of the accredited hospital sponsored programs. Students are required to attend a summer session prior to the start of their clinical practicum. During the fourth year, students complete the 6-12 month Clinical Practicum. Upon graduation, students demonstrate competency and strengthen their credentials by becoming nationally certified through successful completion of a national certification examination.
