Currently the longest-serving Director of Athletics in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Frank O’Brien begins 2007-08 as his 17th year as the leader of one of the nation’s most successful NCAA Division III programs at UW-Stevens Point.

Under O’Brien’s tenure, UW-Stevens Point has posted 10 straight top 25 finishes in the United States Sports Academy Director’s Cup standings, which measure the nation’s top athletics program. The Pointers placed 13th in 2006-07 and posted their best finishes with fifth place efforts in back-to-back seasons in 2003-04 and 2004-05. UW-Stevens Point also won WIAC all-sports awards in 2005 and 2000, while capturing seven men’s all-sports trophies and one women’s all-sports award.

In addition, UW-Stevens Point has won six national championships in four different sports since O’Brien assumed his duties. O’Brien was named the first recipient of the NCAA Division III Central Region Athletic Director of the Year in 1999 by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Visible at nearly all of the university’s home athletics events, O’Brien has led with a hands-on management approach. He is well-known to many of the university’s 500 student-athletes and has helped enhance the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, which performs numerous hours of community service each year. UW-Stevens Point has also had 31 student-athletes receive Academic All-America honors over the past eight years.

O’Brien previously worked as the athletic department’s Business Manager and Associate Director of Athletics. He was the tournament director for the 1994 NCAA Division III wrestling championships and served as commissioner of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association for several seasons. O’Brien was instrumental in the development of women’s hockey as a varsity sport in the West Region and the NCHA women’s playoff trophy was named the O’Brien Cup in 2006. He was a member of the NCAA championships committee for the inaugural Division I women’s ice hockey championship in 2001 and the first four Division III tournaments from 2002-05. O’Brien also served four years on the national committee for Division II-III men’s hockey from 1994-98.

O’Brien began his affiliation with UW-Stevens Point 1980 as a Residence Hall Director, Student Activities Advisor and Assistant Director of Residence Life.

A Bedford, Mass. native, O’Brien received a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Psychology from James Madison University and an M.B.A. from UW-Oshkosh. He and his wife, Renee, have two daughters, Megan and Hannah.
