Adventure Education Minor
AE 150 Introduction to Adventure Education (2 credits). Both
semesters
Awareness of principles, practices and
philosophy associated with Adventure Programming. Emphasis will be on
leading and facilitating groups of different ages and dynamics. Cover
components incorporated in minor, connecting them in the final practicum
experience.
AE 225 Wilderness First Responder (2
credits). Winterim or Spring semester Prereq: WLNS 123
Implementing and practicing standards
set by the Wilderness Medical Associates to become a Wilderness First
Responder.
AE 250 General Camping/Backpacking (3
credits). Spring semester
Two or three season camping and
backpacking techniques will be addressed, including, but not limited to,
camping and backpacking equipment, survival techniques, orienteering,
and trip planning. The use of fundamental facilitation skills in an
outdoor trip environment will be applied.
AE 275 Water Skills (3 credits). Fall
semester-weekend Prereq: WLNS 146
Principles of basic canoeing and sea
kayaking will be at the core of this course. Students will need to be
able to swim and demonstrate skills related to recovery and rescuer
before proceeding to white water canoeing and kayaking. Trip leading and
facilitation skills addressed.
AE 325 Management of Top-Rope
Climbing (3 credits). Spring semester Prereq: WLNS 215 or test
Awareness of techniques associated with
management of a top-rope climbing site both indoor and outdoor. Skills
addressed but not limited to belaying techniques, site selection, leave
no trace use of site, rescue and emergency techniques. Site management
and facilitation skills will be used.
AE 350 Challenge Course Management (3
credits). Fall semester
Low and high rope facilitation will be
at the center of this course. Philosophical and ethical issues dealing
with risk-taking, as a learning tool will be covered. Safety issues,
belaying, programming, sequencing, and course set-up and tear down will
be featured. Facilitation opportunities will be provided.
AE 450 Adventure Education Practicum
(3 credits). Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters Prereq: AE 150, 225,
250, 275, 325, 350, 450
Adventure leadersip skills will be
applied, demonstrating naturalistic intelligence while planning and
conducting climbing, camping/backpacking, and water experiences for
other groups. Students will have a choice of directions to work toward
including, but not limited to K-12 students, Central Wisconsin
Environmental Station groups, Peer groups & Lions Camp groups. Students
will have the opportunity plan and facilitate groups from each of these
areas. Development and use of mobile adventure learning course will also
be examined.
