Planned Giving
You have the ability to leave a long lasting legacy at
UWSP. Planned giving is a way to show your support for years to come.
How do I start?
- 1. Select a professional advisor to work with you to
maximize your benefits from your planned gift
- 2. Questions to ask your professional
advisor:
- a. How can I make the most of my charitable giving
plans?
- b. What assets can I use to set up a fund or
trust?
- c. When are the right circumstances and times to
start structuring my donations and contributions?
- d. How can I be sure that my gift will be used per my
specifications?
- e. What are the tax benefits of making a
donation to UWSP?
Bequests
Bequests, or naming UWSP as a beneficiary in your will
or trust document is the most common form of planned giving.
For many a bequest is a means of making a much larger
gift than possible while you may be drawing an income from your investments.
Such bequests are exempt from federal or state estate taxes. A properly planned
bequest can even result in a larger estate passing on to your heirs.
Language for bequests
You can make a bequest to UWSP by inserting certain language in your will
or trust document. State laws pertaining to wills and bequests vary widely, so
please consult your attorney when including a bequest in your will.
SAMPLE BEQUEST LANGUAGE*
For an outright bequest in will
Specific dollar amount: "I bequeath the sum of
$_______ to the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point Foundation, Inc., of
Stevens Point, Wisconsin, to be used or disposed of as its Board of Directors in
its sole discretion deems appropriate."
Specific property (personal property): "I
bequeath (DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY) to the University of Wisconsin - Stevens
Point Foundation, Inc., of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, to be used or disposed of
as its Board of Directors in its sole discretion deems appropriate."
Specific property (real estate): "I devise all
of my right, title and interest in and to the real estate located at
(DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY) to the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point
Foundation, Inc., of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, to be used or disposed of as its

Share of, or entire residue of
estate
"I give and bequeath (all/or _____%) of the remainder
of my property to the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point Foundation, Inc.,
of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, to be used or disposed of as its Board of Directors
in its sole discretion deems appropriate."
Conditional bequest in will: "If my
husband/wife does not survive me, I bequeath the sum of $_______ to the
University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point Foundation, Inc., of Stevens Point,
Wisconsin, to be used or disposed of as its Board of Directors in its sole
discretion deems appropriate."
If the gift to the University of Wisconsin - Stevens
Point Foundation, Inc., is for a purpose other than the Foundation's general
campus-wide use, insert the restriction in place of the words "to be used or
disposed of as its Board of Directors in its sole discretion deems appropriate."
For example:
"I bequeath the sum of $_______to the University of
Wisconsin - Stevens Point Foundation, Inc., of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, for the
following use and purpose: (DESCRIPTION OF PURPOSE)."
In the event of a gift that is subject to a
restriction, you may wish to add one of the following provisions:
"However, I impose no legal or equitable obligation in
this regard."
or
"If in the judgment of the Board of
Directors of the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point Foundation, Inc., of
Stevens Point, Wisconsin, it becomes impossible to accomplish the purposes of
this gift, the income or principal may be used for such related purposes and in
such manner as determined by its Board of Directors."

Life Income Gifts
You can support UWSP without worrying about having
enough income for yourself or your loved ones.
Your life income gifts (such as gift annuities and
charitable remainder trusts) can provide you with an income stream, significant
tax savings, and the satisfaction of providing the UWSP with crucial, long-term
resources.
Remember! When you make a life income gift, it
benefits both you AND this university!
Charitable Gift Annuities
A charitable gift annuity pays you an annual income and leaves a gift for
charity upon your death.
- Immediate-payment gift annuities
Immediate payment gift annuities
allow you to make a substantial gift while retaining an income stream. This type
of gift is particularly desirable if you are age 70 or above. Benefits to the
immediate payment charitable gift annuity are as follows:
- Guaranteed payments for life that are advantageously taxed
- Federal income tax deduction for a portion of your gift
- You help support UWSP
- Deferred-payment gift annuity
As a younger donor, you can assist
UWSP by making a deferred gift annuity. Your benefits will be as follows:
- Provision for a fixed income when you reach 65
- Part of the gift qualifies for an immediate income tax deduction
- The younger you are, the larger the tax deductible portion will be
- Part of the annuity payment may be received as tax-free
income
Charitable Trusts
Charitable remainder trusts enable you to receive a distribution (such as
annually for life or for a designated number of years), with the remainder
interest forwarding to UWSP.
- Charitable Remainder Unitrust
A Charitable Remainder Unitrust
offers you a distribution of a given sum (ordinarily 5 to 6 percent),
fluctuating annually based on yearly establishment of the fair market value of
the trust assets.
- Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust
A Charitable Remainder Annuity
Trust entitles you to a specified distribution from the trust of at least 5
percent of the initial fair market value of the assets in the trust.
