Professional Writing Competency Program

The Professional Writing Competency Program (PWCP) helps future teachers become confident writers by strengthening their ability to write fluently, correctly, and clearly.  Through one-on-one tutoring with a professional staff member, the PWCP helps students:
  • Develop quality, professional writing skills
  • Explore their attitudes about writing
  • Become familiar with the writing process and discover their writing voice
  • Appreciate the importance of reading and writing in the teaching of all disciplines

The Professional Writing Competency Program serves both (a) students who did not meet the minimum Freshman English GPA requirement to apply to the Professional Education Program (PEP) AND (b) students who have already been admitted to the PEP who need assistance in their professional writing.

(a) Students who do not earn a 2.50 GPA in their Freshman English Courses (101 & 102) or a C or better in English 150 may satisfy the SOE Freshmen English Admission Requirement by completing the Professional Writing Competency Program.

The PWCP process:
  1. A student is given two-hours to write an initial writing assessment.  The fee for the initial assessment is $35.
  2. The PWCP staff evaluates the writing assessment and determines whether or not the student would benefit from the program.
    1. If the PWCP staff determines that the student's writing ability is adequate, the student will be provided with a letter waving them from the program.
    2. If the PWCP staff determines that the student's writing ability is not adequate, the staff will place the student into one of four categories:
      1. Category I ($75):  The student will be asked to revise his/her assessment, paying special attention to areas the evaluators have indicated. Normally, this requires four, one-half hour, sessions with a tutor plus homework and journaling.
      2. Category II ($125):  The student will be asked to revise the assessment and write one additional paper, keep a six-page journal, and meet seven, one-half hour sessions with a tutor. The additional paper may include a personal experience or an informative memo or letter.
      3. Category III ($175): The student will be asked to revise the assessment, write two additional papers, keep a nine-page journal, and attend ten tutorials. The papers will be the same as those required for Category II, with the addition of another persuasive letter or memo.
      4. Category IV ($200): The student will be asked to revise the assessment, write three additional papers, keep a twelve-page journal, and meet thirteen times with a tutor. The paper will include those in Category III, and one additional essay, which will be determined upon your placement into this category.

Students interested in the Professional Writing Competency Program should contact the SOE Undergraduate Advising Office in 469 College of Professional Studies or call 715-346-2040 to schedule an initial assessment.

(b) Students already admitted to the Professional Education Program who would like assistance in their professional writing should contact their assigned advisor in the School of Education for a referral.  The Professional Writing Competency Program is FREE for students admitted to the PEP.
