The first activity I had my students participate in was finding out their True Colors. I wanted them to understand their learning styles and why they choose the activities they do, and why they react to differernt situations in different ways. In my ED class of 8 11th grade boys, 6 had Orange as their primary colors and the other two had Orange as a secondary color. When we discussed the findings, they wondered if this need for adventure and spontinuity was a reason they might not like school as much as they do and might be a reason for their ED placement. As the activities continued, I had the students study other people who made a difference in the world in some way. They then made a list of how they can independently make a difference somewhere in their life. As a final activity, I had the students come up with a service project of their choice. They had to set it up, which they did. They decided on raking a yard in the community. They were very proud to have set the project up and follow through with it. I learned a lot about my students as they learned about themselves. They also learned about their teacher and we became closer as a class. The only change I might make for next year is to do this more towards the beginning of the school year instead of the end.

I think this was one of my favorite papers because I truely was driving home and realizing that my life is really different now than it was even a year ago. I think that I have moments where I forget that I make my own decisions and it's great to be getting better at being myself everyone. I had a great time understanding independence and finding out how it has affected my life, my confidence and my relationships.

I had made myself a handy list of things to keep in mind to foster independence for my students. This way I can keep it in plain view as a constant reminder. I have also made some activities and events to put into my file box of activities for my students that deals with different types of ways they could be independent. We can talk about how good deeds affect other people and what could be done then plan one with the class for moral independence. For health independence, I will make a list of topics and have the students form groups to do presentations and then contact nurses, nutritionists, ect. to come and present to my students. For problem solving I will present problems for them to solve at least once/week and have the students present the different ways they solve them. I will also have my students write requests for information about jobs and careers that spark their interests. I will have them put their own portfolios together at the end of the school year of their best works and then teach them what a portfolio is for. I will also give lessons and homework on how to take good notes by seperating useful information from the rest.

HowItWorkedOut

My project turned out better than I anticipated. I chose to re-educate myself on the fundamentals of the language arts. I have struggled personally and as a teacher with this concept. Finally, I admitted to myself that I had to get help. I have read many books and asked person with an English minor to help in with this.

My project turned out better than I anticipated. I chose to educate myself on the fundamentals of the language arts. I have struggled personally and as a teacher with this concept. Finally, I admitted to myself that I had to get help. I have read many books at the elementary level to help me relearn this topic. For whatever reason, I have blocked out the schooling I received during my elementary years. I have had a stressful semester because of a tramatic loss. However, I have learned many new things and feel a bit more confident in my writing. I also feel that I can grade a paper and know what I am talking about.
