Early Childhood Add-On Certification

This program is designed for teachers who are currently licensed in "regular education" grades 1-6 or 1-8 and who would like to extend their certification down to Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. The program will consist of three courses offered each summer in a two-summer package. Student teaching will follow completion of the course work.

Summer I

HD 490/690 Development of the Preschool Child (1 cr)
Overview of the current research and theory relating to the development of children ages three to six and programming implications.

HD 490/690 Infant Development and Programming (1 cr)
Overview of development of children birth to 2 years of age and the implications for planning developmentally appropriate programs.

EDUC 570 Programs, Families and the Community (3 cr)
This course is designed to help participants understand the types, dynamics and parameters of the relationship between programs, families, and community agencies. Particularly, it provides a historical analysis of early childhood programs and the roles in the lives of families and the community. The course also examines the role of schools and community agencies in the lives of children and their families.

EDUC 570 Programs, Families and the Community Project
(1 cr)

This is the research component of EDUC 570 and it provides opportunities for flexibility and innovation. Having discussed the various aspects of programs, families, and community agencies, each student is required to choose a topic of interest from those covered in class or others related to children, families and/or programs. This topic will then be researched based on a particular focus of interest or clarification of questions identified by the student.

Summer II

EDUC 570 Curriculum and Methods for the Emergent Reader
(2 cr)

This course is designed to examine curriculum and methods for implementing developmentally appropriate emergent literacy programs.

EDUC 570 Curriculum and Methods for Young Children (3 cr)
This course is designed to examine curriculum principles and methods for a developmentally appropriate environment for young children in math, science, social studies, health education and the arts.

EDUC 570 Curriculum and Methods for Young Children Project (1 cr)
This is the research component of EDUC 570. Having discussed the considerations for creating effective curriculum and methods, this topic will be researched based on a particular focus of interest or clarification of questions identified by the student.

HD 490/690 Guidance of Young Children (2 cr)
This course is designed to consider current research and theory related to the guidance of young children and applications to home and school environments.

Student Teaching following completion of required coursework (6 credits with 3 credits Pre-Kindergarten and 3 credits Kindergarten).
