Project Forward

Project Forward is a program designed to assist Hmong-American bilingual paraprofessionals, recent high school graduates, and graduate Students to become certified teachers within the state of Wisconsin

Objectives
The objective of the program is to provide full tuition support for 24 Undergraduate students to pursue teaching degrees of their choice--Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Special Education.  In addition, the program provides full tuition for five Graduate students to pursue Guidance and Counseling of Education Administration degrees.

Currently, there are six participating campuses:  UW-Marathon, UW-Marshfield/Wood County, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Superior, and UW-Stout.  Participants at the two-year campuses must transfer to any one of the four-year campuses to complete their teaching degrees.

Participants
The participants are mainly from three communities:  Wausau, Stevens Point, and Wisconsin Rapids.  The criteria for the program are as follows:

  • Participants are of Hmong-American descent
  • Participants have earned a High School Diploma or a High School Equivalency Degree
  • Participants will take teaching certifiable courses in the subject area of their choice through the six universities involved (UW-Marathon, UW-Marshfield/Wood County, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Superior, and UW-Stout)
  • Participants will pursue ESL or Bilingual education certification minor
Requirements of Project Forward
  • Participants must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.75 to sustain tuition support
  • Participants must attend monthly individual meetings with Project Coordinator
  • Participants must attend mandatory large group meetings as requested by program coordinator
Currently, there are 29 participants in Project Forward.  Nine are/were paraprofessionals, 15 are non-paraprofessionals, and five are graduate students.  Out of the 29 participants, 22 attend UW-Stevens Point, 4 attend UW-Marathon County, and 4 attend the other campuses involved.
