A Capstone Project will be completed during the third year of study. This project requires an in-depth literature review to probe a controversial topic or a clinically relevant investigation of limited scope. The nature and focus of the Capstone Project must be accepted by a committee of three academic or clinical faculty with at least two academic faculty members and with representation from each campus. Each student will work with a faculty mentor in developing the project. At the end of the third year, the student will produce a written report for the committee and an oral report at a meeting of colleagues and faculty. The student's committee will determine whether the student passes this exercise and will make appropriate recommendations if the work is less than satisfactory. This project is a substantial, summative report on a clinical topic, with a close connection to clinical experience, knowledge, and practice. The quality of the project should render it acceptable as a presentation at a professional meeting but it will not necessarily be of publishable quality.
During the fourth year of study, the students are required to design, pursue, and document a program of 2.0 CEUs (continuing education units, or 20 contact hours) sponsored by an agency accredited by a professional organization to provide such events. Professional organizations require this activity to maintain licensure. By including this activity in the program, we will ensure that students know how to choose and document this activity prior to graduation.
